From time to time I get questions about my studies, and study related posts seem to be quite popular in general, so I thought it'd be a good time to do a little update on that front. There also seems to be a few new faces on the other side of the screen (thank you for that ♥︎), so I feel like a study update is in order. And what could be a better time to share a study related post than now when I just started my Christmas holidays last Friday.
Mitä?
What?
Miksi?
Why?
Studying in the UK had been one of my biggest dreams for a long time, as well as studying fashion and eventually build a career in the field. After high school I completed a Fashion Marketing course in Helsinki Design School, which acted as an extra boost on the decision to apply and still works as a good base on which to build on in my uni studies. Although studying abroad had been a dream of mine for such a long time, I contemplated the decision to actually apply for quite some time, and actually searched for fashion degrees in Finland too. However, fashion studies are still quite a new thing in Finland and not many courses exist at all. So despite the nervousness I sent an application through UCAS to five different courses, three of which were based in London and two here in Scotland. I ended up getting an unconditional offer to two of of London based courses, but after getting accepted to my current course I decided to listen to my brain instead of my heart. If I had accepted a place in either one of the courses in London, I would've faced the tuition fees of £9,000/year, whereas in Scotland the tuition fees of EU students are paid for if you're studying on an undergrad course.
Mikä fiilis?
How do I feel?
My feelings tend to vary depending on the situation and module, but in general I'm really happy that I decided to leave Finland, and with my studies as a whole. Especially now on second year the modules are so much more interesting and more related to 'our field' than on first year. I still very much think some modules are way better than others, and sometimes I feel like we've been discussing the same things for weeks without actually getting any deeper or further in the topic. But I also know that my studies are constantly getting me closer to my career dreams and goals, and on those occasions when I'm feeling especially frustrated I remind myself of those dreams and goals again to gain back the motivation. Alongside the more interesting modules, the people I have around me have also made second year better than the first one. I've become much closer with many of my uni friends, and moving away from the student halls and into a real flat that feels like home has made me enjoy my time in Glasgow much more again.
Mitä opintojen jälkeen?
Jos teillä tulee mieleen mitä tahansa opiskeluihin liittyviä kysymyksiä, niin laittakaa ihmeessä kommenttia tulemaan! Tästä aiheesta voisin myös tehdä Q&A-tyylisen postauksen, mikäli kiinnostusta löytyy?
After graduating?
Although I do like living in Glasgow right now, I still don't see myself staying any longer after graduation. Because I never ended up studying in London, in a way I've always known that Scotland will be just a 'staging post' for me to complete my studies. At the moment my future plans are very much open otherwise, but after completing this BA degree the idea is to go to London, back to Finland, or somewhere in Scandinavia. For example Stockholm and Copenhagen have started to interest me quite a lot recently, but we'll see where I'll actually end up in approximately two and a half years.
If you have any question about my studies leave them in the comments below! I've also been thinking about a Q&A post on this topic if there is any interest towards that?
