The Style Rules I Live By

Vaikka oonkin sitä mieltä että muodin, tyylin ja pukeutumisen kanssa saa ja pitää leikitellä, ottaa vähän riskejä ja rohkeasti avoimin mielin kokeilla uusia juttuja, niin on tiettyjä 'tyylisääntöjä', joita omassa pukeutumisfilosofiassani noudatan. Nämä viisi tyylisääntöä on ne mun tyylin peruspilarit, jotka on muotoutuneet vuosien kuluessa erinäisten yritysten ja erehdysten kautta.

Although I think that you can and should play, take risks, keep an open mind and try new things when it comes to fashion, style, and clothing, I've still got a few 'style rules' underpinning my personal style philosophy. These five style rules are the building blocks of my style which have formed over the course of the years through trial and error. 



1. Neutraalit toimii aina. Musta, valkoinen, ruskea, beige, harmaa... Luonnollinen ja neutraali väripaletti tuntuu ehdottomasti kaikkein omimmalta, ja neutraalin väripaletin kanssa harvoin tulee mentyä överin puolelle. Välillä on kiva leikitellä väreillä, ja esimerkiksi punainen piristää aina silloin tällöin, mutta oman tyylini nyrkkisääntönä on ehdottomasti se että neutraalit värit on ne parhaat. Helppoja yhdistellä ja sopii milloin vaan mihin vaan.

2. Vähemmän on enemmän. Sanotaan että yksinkertainen on kaunista, ja mä olen tässä ihan samaa mieltä - erityisesti mitä tulee omaan tyyliini ja pukeutumiseen. Joillekin sopii älyttömän hyvin kokeilevampi tyyli, erikoiset leikkaukset, volyymi tai muut oikein näyttävät jutut, mutta jos itse vetäisin esimerkiksi maksipituisen tylliröyhelöhameen päälleni, olisi lopputulos lähinnä naurettava. Yksinkertaisuus ja vähemmän on enemmän sääntö pätee mulla myös koruihin: simppeliä ja siroa, eikä liikaa kerralla. Tai sitten jos esimerkiksi korvissa on vähän näyttävämpi korvakorupari, niin kaikki muut asusteet aivan minimiin.

1. Neutrals never fail. Black, white, brown, beige, grey... A neutral and earthy colour palette definitely feels the most 'me' and with a neutral palette you can rarely go over-the-top. Sometimes it's fun to play with a bit of colour, and for example red is something I like to use every once in a while, but my style rule of thumb definitely is that neutral tones are the best. Easy to combine and are suitable to wear anywhere anytime.

2. Less is more. They say that simple is beautiful, and I definitely agree with this - especially when it comes to my style and dressing. Some people really suit the more adventurous and experimental style, unusual cuts, volume or real statement looks, but if I personally put on for example a maxi length frilled tulle skirt, the end result would be just ridiculous. I also apply the simplicity and less is more rule to jewellery: simple and dainty pieces, and not too many at the same time. Or if I'm wearing e.g. a more statement pair of earrings then I'm keeping all other accessories to the minimum.



3. Bleiserillä ei voi mennä vikaan. Heh, no surprises here... Bleiserit on mun ikuinen rakkaus, ja oon sitä mieltä että uudelle bleiserille on vaatekaapissa aina tilaa. Käytän bleisereitä useampana päivänä viikosta, ja ne on myös yksi niistä vaatekappaleista jotka sopii niin arkeen kuin juhlaankin. Oon ollut bleiserissä ja leggingseissä kirjastossa ja kaupungilla, ja bleiserissä ja puvunhousuissa veljen ylioppilasjuhlissa. Bleiserit tuo mihin tahansa lookiin ryhtiä, ja ne saa olon tuntumaan itsevarmemmalta mikä myös tuntuu ja näkyy ulospäin.

3. You can never go wrong with a blazer. No surprises here, hehe... I've got what will probably be a never ending love for blazers, and there's always space for a new blazer in my wardrobe. I wear blazers multiple times a week, and they're also one of the pieces you can wear in everyday life as well as to more special occasions. I've worn a blazer with leggings to the library and when running errands in town, and I've worn a blazer with suit trousers to my brother's graduation party. Blazers make any outfit look a bit sharper, and they make you feel more confident.

4. Kontrastit tuo mielenkiintoa. Koska mun tyyli on muuten, noh.. yksinkertainen, tykkään leikitellä erilaisilla kontrasteilla tehdäkseni asuista mielenkiintoisia. Kontrasteista oon kirjoitellut aiemminkin, esimerkiksi tässä postauksessa, ja tykkään yhdistää asuissa erilaisia materiaaleja ja tyylejä. Esimerkiksi 'kovaa' farkkua pehmeän karvan kanssa kuten kuvissa, tai nahkaa neulosmateriaalin kanssa. Tai tyylien osalta maskuliinista ja feminiinistä, tai sporttista ja skarppia kuten vaikkapa se aiemmin mainittu bleiseri ja leggingsit -combo.

5. Mukavuus ja itsevarmuus ennen kaikkea. Tämä on mulle se kaikkein tärkein 'tyylisääntö', ja oikeastaan kaikki neljä ylempää kohtaa kulminoituu ja johtaa juuri tähän! Muodin, tyylin ja vaatteiden on tarkoitus saada meidät tuntemaan olomme hyviksi ja itsevarmoiksi, ja jos jokin vaate tai asu ei saa aikaan tätä fiilistä niin se on multa 'ei jatkoon'.

4. Contrasts make outfits interesting. As my style is otherwise, well... simple, I like to play with different contrasts to make my outfits look more interesting. I've written about contrasts earlier too, for example in this post, and I like to combine different materials and styles in my outfits. For example 'hard' denim with soft faux fur like in these pictures, or leather with knitted materials. Or when it comes to styles, combining masculine and feminine, or sporty and sharp like that blazer and leggings combo that I mentioned.

5. Feeling comfortable and confident above all. This is the most important 'style rule' for me, and basically all of the four rules above culminate and lead exactly to this! Fashion, style and and clothes are supposed to make us feel good and confident, and so if an item of clothing or an outfit doesn't make me feel that way then it's a no from me.

Näiden omien tyylisääntöjeni puitteissa siis kokeilen eri juttuja ja rakennan asuja. Ne kokeilutkin yleensä onnistuu ja johtaa tuohon viimeiseen ja tärkeimpään sääntöön kun aiemmat neljä kohtaa toteutuu.

Within these style rules of mine I try and experiment with different things and build my outfits. Nowadays even those experimentations usually succeed and lead to the last rule when I adhere to the other four.
