Vietin viikko sitten ihanan pidennetyn viikonlopun ystäväni luona Lontoossa, ja ai että miten hyvää reissu tekikään - monellakin tavalla! Matkustaminen pandemian aikaan ei kuitenkaan ole ihan yksinkertaista ja itsellänikin tuli muutamia mutkia matkaan. Tähän postaukseen olenkin koonnut omia vinkkejä ja huomioitani, jotka kannattaa pitää mielessä kun matkustaa Lontooseen. Huomioi, että tämä postaus pohjautuu tosiaan täysin omiin kokemuksiini joulukuussa 2021.
Last weekend I spent a lovely long weekend visiting my friend in London, and the trip sure did good in more ways than one! However, travelling during the pandemic isn't exactly straight forward and there were a few drawbacks to my trip too. In this post I've put together my tips and notions of what to keep in mind when travelling to London. Please note, that this post is based solely on my personal experiences in December 2021.

Matkustaminen Lontooseen pandemian aikana
Ennen matkaa
Ensinnäkin on hyvä muistuttaa, että kannattaa varautua nopeisiinkin muutoksiin ja tilanteiden muuttumiseen. Vaatimukset ja käytännöt maahan saapuville matkustajille saattaa vaihtua hyvinkin nopeasti, mikä oli juurikin mitä itselleni kävi. Alunperin olisi pitänyt riittää, että toisena päivänä maahan saapumisesta kävisin kevyemmässä lateral flow -testissä, mutta vain muutama päivä ennen reissua Iso-Britannian hallitus määräsi että kaikkien maahan saapuvien pitää tehdä viimeistään toisena päivänä saapumisesta ihan kunnon PCR-testi ja olla karanteenissa kunnes testitulos tulee. Ja totta kai testin tulos sitten määrittelee, mitä sen jälkeen tapahtuu. Sekä lateral flow että PCR testi varataan ja maksetaan etukäteen, sillä testin varauksen yhteydessä saa koodin joka on täytettävä passenger locator formiin. Passenger locator form puolestaan tulee täyttää 48 tunnin sisällä ennen maahan saapumista. Tällä hetkellä Iso-Britanniaan matkustaminen vaatii siis hyvää aikataulutusta ja erilaisten lomakkeiden täyttöä. Lentoyhtiön henkilökunta myös tarkistaa sekä koronapassin että passenger locator formin check inin yhteydessä, minkä vuoksi check iniä ei voi tehdä itse lentokentän automaateilla. Muista myös, että koska Iso-Britannia ei ole enää osa EU:ta, lennot lähtevät non-Shengen alueelta, jonne mennään vielä erillisien passintarkastuksen jälkeen. Kannattaa myös varautua ylimääräiseen rahanmenoon, sillä peruutetuista vääristä testeistä ei välttämättä saa rahoja takaisin. Testiä ei myöskään voi varata julkiselle NHS:lle, vaan testi täytyy buukata yksityiseltä tarjoajalta. Paikasta, testityypistä ja tulosten saamisen nopeudesta riippuen hinnat vaihtelee muutamasta punnasta jopa yli sataan puntaan. Ja nyt oman reissuni jälkeen matkustuskäytännöt ovat käsittääkseni muuttuneet vielä niin, että matkustajilta vaaditaan negatiivinen testi jo lähtömaassa. Suosittelen siis pitämään tiiviisti silmällä Brittien hallituksen virallisia sivuja, ja seuraamaan myös esimerkiksi BBC:n uutisia. Huomioi myös, että ohjeet ja säännöt vaihtelee riippuen mistä maasta tulee ja onko rokotuksia vai ei.
Travelling to London during the pandemic
Before the trip
First of all I want to remind you, that it's good to prepare for quick changes and new situations when it comes to travelling. The requirements and procedures for travellers entering the UK can change very quickly, which is exactly what happened to me. Initially I was supposed to only need a lateral flow test on the second day of arrival, but only a few days before I was to take off the UK Government changed the guidelines and everyone entering the country now has to do a PCR test on the second day of arrival at latest, and self-isolate until you get the test result. And the result then obviously determines what happens afterwards. Both the lateral flow and PCR tests need to be booked and paid in advance, as only then you will get a reference number that you need to include in your passenger locator form. And the passenger locator form has to be filled within 48 hours before arriving to the UK. So currently, travelling to the United Kingdom requires some good scheduling and completing different documents and forms. The airline staff also checks your corona pass and the passenger locator form when you check in, which is why you can't complete your check-in at the self check-in points at the airport. Also keep in mind, that now that the UK is not part of the EU anymore, the flights go out from the non-Shengen area, and there is a separate passport control you need to get through to that. And be prepared for additional extra costs popping here and there, as for example you rarely get a refund if you need to cancel a test you've already booked and paid for. You also can't get your test through the public NHS, but you have to book through a private provider. And depending on the place, the type of test you're getting and how quickly you'll get your results, the prices can range anywhere from just a few pounds to over a hundred. And as I'm aware, already now after my trip the UK Government has changed the rulings again, and now it is required for all passengers to have a negative test already in the country they're travelling from. I can't suggest warmly enough to keep a close eye on the UK Government website and e.g. BBC news around the time of your trip in order to keep informed about what is required from you. Also note that the rules and guidelines are different to different people, depending on the country you're travelling from and whether you are vaccinated or not.
Matkan aikana
Nyt joulukuussa 2021 Lontoossa käytettiin maskeja lähinnä julkisessa liikenteessä, kaupassa ja muissa julkisissa sisätiloissa. Maskien käyttö oli siis aika samanlaista kuin Suomessakin. Ja esimerkiksi metrossa matkustaminen ilman maskia saattaa johtaa sakkoihin, tai matkustaminen voidaan estää kokonaan. Jonkun verran kyllä näki ihmisiä ilmankin maskia, mutta suurimmaksi osaksi ohjeita noudatettiin hyvin. Ravintoloissa ja kahviloissa maskeja käytettiin puolestaan aika vaihdellen, niin asiakkaiden kuin henkilökunnankin toimesta. Koronapassia puolestaan ei kysytty missään, vaikka joissakin paikoissa siitä oli maininta. Yleisesti ottaen Lontoossa liikkuminen ja oleminen oli helppoa, koska pandemian asettamat rajoitteet ja suositukset oli käytännössä samat kuin mihin oli tottunut Suomessakin.
Ja itselleni täysin uutena, mutta metromatkustamista huomattavasti helpottavana asiana opin ystävältäni että metrossa liikkumista varten ei välttämättä enää tarvitse ostaa erillistä lippua tai ladata Oyster cardia. Metroporteista voi kulkea myös pankkikorttia vilauttamalla, ja matkan summa lähtee automaattisesti tililtä kun korttia näyttää portilla metrosta pois noustessa. Ja ainakin oma suomalainen pankkikorttini toimi loistavasti joka kerralla. Super kätevää, ja vähentää ainakin paperisten lippujen kanssa säätämistä huomattavasti!
During the trip
Now in December 2021 face coverings were used primarily in public transport, in shops and in other public indoor places. And e.g. travelling on the underground without a face covering could result in you getting a fine or being banned from entering the train. However, you could see people travelling without face coverings too, but in general the rule was well followed. In restaurants and coffee shops the use of masks was very variant, both from the customers as well as from the staff side. Corona pass on the other hand was never asked, even though some places did have a mention of it. Generally speaking travelling and being in London was easy, as the same restrictions and guidelines are pretty much in effect everywhere and we are so used to them already.
But a totally new thing I learned from my friend, which makes travelling especially on the London underground a whole lot easier, is that you basically don't need a separate ticket or put money on your Oyster card anymore. You can simply swipe your bank card at the gates when entering and departing, and the cost of the journey then automatically comes out of your bank account. And at least my Finnish bank card worked perfectly every time. Super handy, and reduces the amount of tube tickets that always tend to accumulate!
Matkan jälkeen
Reissusta palaamisen jälkeen ei vaadittu oikeastaan mitään kummempia toimenpiteitä. Tosin nykyisessä maailmantilanteessa ohjeistus Suomeen palaamisen jälkeen saattaa sekin muuttua nopeasti, eli tarkista aina mikä on tilanne oman reissusi jälkeen. Suomen päässä tarkistettiin koronapassi ennen lentokentältä poistumista, mutta muita erityisjärjestelyjä ei oikeastaan ollut. Ja totta kai myös takaisin tullessa on vielä erillinen passintarkastus kun saavutaan EU:n ulkopuolisesta maasta. Takaisinpäin tullessa passintarkastuksessa olikin jonkin verran jonoa ja jonkin aikaa joutui odottelemaan, eli varaa aikaa ja tarvittaessa pitkää pinnaa myös tähän.
After the trip
After coming home from London, there were not really any specific procedures to follow. Although reminding you again that in the current world state this is subject to change very very quickly too, so always check what is the situation at any one time during the time of your travel. When arriving back to Finland I was asked to show my corona pass in order to be able to leave the airport, but other than that nothing unusual. There was of course another passport control when arriving back too as I came from outside the EU again. On the way back the line to passport control was fairly long and I had to wait for quite a while, so prepare with enough time and nerves if necessary.
